Let’s talk about branding, facebook and your timeline! Social Media Examiner recently posted 5 Ways to Enhance Your Facebook Timeline Page with Images. Let’s take a quick look at what those five things are.
1. The Cover Photo: Your Biggest Branding Opportunity! A unique single image 851 x 315. Use this image to represent your page as a whole, you want this to be a strong visual image to create a HUGE impact for your page. Be sure to follow Facebook’s strict guidelines in regards to this image.
2. The Profile Picture: The Hardest-Working Image on Facebook! 125 pixel square image that now does triple duty! It is an extension of your cover photo in the bottom left corner, your thumbnail icon that travels with your posts on your pages and other pages, and the main brand image used in the facebook app for iPhones and other mobile devices.
3. Custom Tab Images: Make Sure You Take Advantage of These! You now have a maximum of four tabs (including the photo tab) prominently displayed at 111 x 74 pixels plus the tab name below the image!
4. Highlighting Posts to Create Visual Interest!: using the new “highlight” feature to bring a bit of visual order to the chaos of timeline is simple, clicking on the “star” icon that appears in the top-right area when you mouse over one of your updates. When you highlight a page status, it then occupies two columns in your Timeline.
5. Create Milestones to Make Your Page “Sticky!”: Establish benchmark dates on your timeline, then utilize imagery in your milestones. Create as many of these as you like! The benefit? Imagery will take center stage.

Let’s Talk Type!
Today I want to touch briefly on Typography! Some of the latest trends in typography as listed in
Ten Web Typography Trends to Watch in 2012
Typographic Voice Diversity – this means seeing several different typefaces used altogether in the same piece. Ensuring these work cohesively, yet each showing it’s own unique personality. Type is to text what voice is to speech. Speak Loudly!
Larger Font Sizes – typicaly 12pt printed type is equal to 16px screen type, time to make those fonts bigger! The “above the fold” myth and the belief that small type looks more sophisticated is disappearing. Make your type bold and make a statement!
Slab Serif Fonts – These are becoming a preference as the bold serifs hold their own on the screen where anti-aliasing happens.
Letterpress and Other Text Shadow Based Effects – Aside from the straightforward text shadow effects, letterpress is the effect that is seen most frequently. There are many others, all achieved through the judicious application of text shadows.
Color Contrast – Please be careful to ensure when using this technique that you follow the W3C’s guidelines for color readability adn web accessibility guidelines to ensure you do not stray too far.
Mixing Font Weights – Considering using the @font-face rule and you can use any of the font weights available by simply assigning each weight its own font-weight value or, alternatively, a unique font name for each weight.
More Space! – More space in designs is a very good thing, allowing for easier scanning and cleaner, less cluttered designs.
Responsive Typography – A development methodology which forgoes the one-size-fits-all philosophy of the past, and instead leverages CSS media queries and the JavaScript language to deliver designs that are tailored to the capabilities of the user’s device. This means not only resizing images and interface elements but also tweaking the typography of designs so they scale up or down as needed. This applies to font sizes and well as column widths, line height and even justification in some instances.
Handwritten Fonts – Type that looks as if it were written by hand gives a friendly, open and approachable feel.
Dingbats Instead of Images – The advantage of using a font for a dingbat, in place of an image is scalability and styles.

Today I want to touch on infographics! They seem to be the latest and the greatest, let me tell you I like them! I mean if I have to look at statistics on a regular basis, I love not having to look at a table or a pie graph, let me at that infographic! Hard to believe what is considered the origination of information graphics is considered the actual cave paintings. The basic elements of an information graphic include things such as data, information, or knowledge that the graphic represents. With the case of data, the creator may make use of graphing software to represent the data in the form of lines, boxes, arrows and other various symbols and pictograms. The infographic might also feature a key defining the visual elements in plain English. A scale and labels are also very common. The elements of an infographic do not have to be exact or realistic representation of the data. Many forms of infographics take advantage of innate visual language that is largely universal. Careful use of the color red, for emphasis, on an otherwise muted design, demands attention in a primal way even children understand. It is true what they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” especially when it is done right.
